For all Christians, the fact that Jesus welcomes sinners is the best news in the world. It ought to be something we worship and thank him for every day. Jesus welcomes sinners. I’m a great sinner. That must mean he’ll welcome me if I come to him for mercy. This is good news indeed.
Don’t be put off by the cost involved in following Jesus. We all must follow someone, and this will either be Jesus or the powers of darkness. Yes, being a disciple is costly and is a battle, but the rewards are certain and more than worth it.
Jesus has died an atoning death and risen again and all those in the highways and byways need are the empty hands of faith. They just need to accept the invitation with thanks. You might reject God’s grace, but he is determined to have a people. Don’t assume you will go to Heaven. Don’t refuse the invitation, but urgently accept it.
The gospel we claim to believe in must make a difference in how we think and how we live. Those who know they are undeserving sinners whom God has rescued form the pit will delight in, at least in some measure, in extending that same unconditional love to others.
Oh, how good it is to stop, and look, and listen to what God’s saying… to us!
